On August 24th through the 26th, David competed at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Master Worlds.  He became a Masters World Champ for a 2nd time in 3 years! #HolyCow

In 2015, he was the Light Feather Master World Champ as a Blue Belt where soon after he was promoted to a Purple Belt.  In 2016 he placed 3rd in the Light Feather as a Purple Belt but this year placed FIRST as a Purple Belt and now is a BROWN BELT! #AgainHolyCow

What got him started in #BJJ? <— I decided to abbreviate!

His health.  Like many of us who transition from the operations team to work at the regional office,  he was starting to eat and snack a lot more.  In just 2 months, at his desk job, he put on 35 pounds!  In 2011, he took his wellness test that all United employees are encouraged to take, and was told he was ‘pre-obese.’ Just like that, he decided to do something about it.  He walked next door, he was working at #529 (United, Amarillo), and signed up for BJJ classes and was hooked.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and choke-holds to defeat the opponent.  BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations!

Belt progression in BJJ is as followed: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.  To get from White to Black, usually takes 10 years.  David is now a Brown Belt and is on his way to getting his Black Belt.

How cool is that!?

WAY TO GO, DAVID! Now I want to try BJJ! Who wants to join me?  🙂
