A Special Earth Day Celebration with Art, Creativity & Community

Earth Day at The United Family is always colorful, and this year was no exceptionUnited Supermarkets and Market Street teamed up with Lubbock ISD to celebrate Earth Day in Lubbock by recognizing the winner of our annual Earth Day Art Contest, a project that continues to help students and the community think about sustainability in a fun way.

For several years, our teams have partnered with Lubbock ISD on a special Earth Day tradition, donating paper bags for students to decorate with Earth Day–inspired artwork. What started as a simple art project has grown into a full-fledged contest, with hundreds of decorated bags created by local students and proudly distributed in our stores each year on Earth Day.

This year, approximately 2,000 bags were shared with 10 Lubbock ISD elementary schools — and every single one showcased incredible imagination and thoughtfulness around the environmentally friendly holiday.

After sorting through countless standout designs, one piece rose to the top. Fifth grader Leonardo Preciado was selected as this year’s contest winner and was celebrated at a special ceremony at Market Street at 50th and Indiana in Lubbock.

Leonardo received a prize bag and gift card, and his artwork is being featured at select United Family locations in honor of Earth Day. Guests can also spot many of the student designed bags in stores, making each visit a reminder of the holiday.

“Our Earth Day Art Contest is one of our favorite ways to help kids engage with Earth Day in a fun, creative way,” said Abie Rampy, director of public relations for The United Family.

Lubbock ISD Superintendent Dr. Kathy Rollo echoed that sentiment, sharing that projects like this help students understand how even small actions can lead to meaningful change, both inside and outside the classroom.

A big thank you to our store teams, Lubbock ISD art teachers, and the many talented students who helped make this tradition a success. Initiatives like this reflect who we are at The United Family. We are committed to community, education, and helping build a more sustainable future together. Happy Earth Day!
