United Supermarkets Donates $30,000 to Food2Kids to Help Fight Childhood Hunger

At United Supermarkets, caring for our communities goes beyond our store walls. It means investing in programs and partnerships that make a real difference in the lives of local families.

That commitment came to life this week when United Supermarkets donated $30,000 to Food2Kids, a Lubbock-based nonprofit dedicated to helping children facing food insecurity. In addition, UCrew members volunteered their time to pack snack bags for students entering their first week of school!

The donation will directly support Food2Kids’ Weekend Snack Bag Program, an initiative designed to ensure children have access to nutritious food when school meals are unavailable. For many students, free breakfast and lunch at school are reliable sources of nutrition during the week. The challenge comes on the weekends.

Food2Kids helps bridge that gap by providing snack bags that students can take home every Friday, ensuring they have to food until they return to school on Monday.

During the last school year alone, Food2Kids served more than 2,200 children across 37 schools in the Lubbock area. The organization currently supports students in Lubbock ISD, Frenship ISD, New Home ISD and New Deal ISD, and hopes to eventually expand the program to provide year-round assistance.

“We’re honored to support this organization and, in particular, the Weekend Snack Bag Program,” said Tony Crumpton, Market Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for The United Family. “Food insecurity remains a significant challenge in many of our communities, and Food2Kids is making a meaningful difference by helping bridge that gap. We’re proud to stand behind their mission and the impact they have on local children and families.”

The need for programs like the Weekend Snack Bag Program continues to grow. Each bag costs approximately $4 to fill, adding up to about $80 per semester, or $160 annually, for each child served. Contributions from community partners like United Supermarkets help ensure Food2Kids can continue delivering these critical resources to children who need them most.

“We are incredibly grateful for The United Family and its commitment to investing in the children of our community,” said Jerry Ramirez, Executive Director of Food2Kids. “Over this last school year, Food2Kids packed tens of thousands of snack bags at a cost exceeding $220,000. We sincerely thank The United Family for helping offset this expense. Their support is making a tremendous difference.”

Through partnerships with organizations like Food2Kids, we can help ensure that more children have access to the nourishment they need to learn, grow, and succeed. A special shoutout to our UCrew members for donating their time and helping support such an important cause!
