Odessa Market Street hosts local STEM Academy event for community

Earlier this year, the Market Street team in Odessa hosted their second annual UTPB STEM Academy Family Night, a fun event designed to engage with students and parents on the subject of math.

On the night of the event, the team hosted nearly 250 students and family members in the store. Students had to complete questions at 10 different stations across the departments of the store. Each station contained special math questions and challenges all geared towards life in a grocery store.

As students bounced around to each station, they tracked their progress on special cards. And, since all that math can work up an appetite, the Market Street team had hot chocolate and cookies prepared as a reward when students and their families finished all of the stations.

Kris Phillips, store director for the Odessa Market Street, said the team and their guests had a wonderful time that evening and are already looking forward to planning for next year.

The STEM Academy prepares students to be STEM college and career ready with a shared focus on collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking. Opening in 2014, it’s located on the University of Texas Permian Basin campus.

Using special events like these, STEM Academy exposes its students to a variety of career opportunities.

A big shoutout to Kris and the entire team for their outstanding work. Their commitment to both education and the community truly reflects the best of who we are. Thank you for consistently leading with purpose and heart!
