The South Fork Fire: Ruidoso's Unsung Hero
In June, Ruidoso, New Mexico, and the surrounding areas suffered from intense wildfires which devastated more than 25,000 acres of land. When tragedy strikes, it’s the selfless front-line workers who go the extra mile to ensure the community has access to basic necessities.
Markus Stephens, store director of the Albertsons Market in Ruidoso, worked tirelessly to make sure that this was the case.
When the city evacuation notice was announced, Markus headed to the nearest Albertsons Market in Roswell, New Mexico, to prepare for the crowds of evacuees. His problem-solving and quick thinking were able to help Roswell handle the Ruidoso locals more efficiently.
The next day, after assessing how close the fire was to the Ruidoso Albertsons Market building through the store’s security cameras, Markus headed back to see how he could help. He decided to first open the store for the first responders in the area. After a woman came to the store asking to purchase a few things, Markus decided to open the store to everyone.
Markus worked 10+ hour days just to ensure the community was cared for. He sent 19 pallets of necessities to the Inn of the Mountain Gods and worked tirelessly with local restaurants, catering services, and eager volunteers to guarantee that the locals who stayed behind and the first responders could receive hot meals, free of charge. Because of Markus and his team’s selfless work, Albertsons Market has received daily trucks to make sure that the shelves stay stocked.
The Ruidoso community is so important to The United Family, and despite the work still to be done, we are so proud of their resilience.
To Markus and the Ruidoso Albertsons Market team, you are our unsung heroes. Your efforts and tireless dedication were the first few steps taken toward the reconstruction of Ruidoso, and your community is in better shape because of it! Thank you, Markus, for all of your hard work, and for showing the city of Ruidoso what it means to be a part of The United Family. If you or someone you know is still in need, or you are feeling led to donate, visit the South Fork/Salt Fire Information Hub here.
