Take A Bite Out of Hunger 2025

When you think of fighting hunger, fresh apples might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But for 15 years now, those crisp and juicy apples have made a difference for families across Texas and New Mexico, and this year was no exception.

In late April and early May, The United Family teamed up once again with FirstFruits Farms to donate 50,000 pounds of apples to local food banks through the Take a Bite Out of Hunger campaign. This multi-year campaign has provided 650,000+ pounds of apples shared with neighbors in need over the years.

“The United Family is blessed to be in a position to make the donations for the fifteenth year in a row,” said Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family. “We know just how important donations of fresh produce can be for food banks and their clients. We are thankful for this partnership with FirstFruits and the hard work of our team members across Texas and New Mexico.”

The idea behind Take a Bite Out of Hunger is to provide nutritious food to those facing hunger, while raising awareness about food insecurity in our communities. It’s a mission that started with FirstFruits Farms and has grown stronger every year with like-minded partners like The United Family.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Aimee Bach with FirstFruits Farms and this is what she had to say about the partnership.

“At FirstFruits Farms, we believe every positive action makes a difference—whether it’s sponsoring local programs or addressing hunger on a national scale,” said Aimee Bach, business development manager of FirstFruits Farms. “Our mission to serve and uplift communities aligns perfectly with United Supermarkets. We’re proud to work together now for 15 years with their shoppers and team to bring fresh, healthy fruit to families in need with the Take a Bite out of Hunger® campaign.”

This year’s apple donations were delivered to food banks across Texas and New Mexico, including:

South Plains Food Bank – Lubbock, TX

High Plains Food Bank – Amarillo, TX

Food Bank of West Central Texas – Abilene, TX

Minnies Food Pantry – Plano, TX

West Texas Food Bank – Odessa, TX

Wichita Falls Area Food Bank – Wichita Falls, TX

Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico – Clovis, NM

Roadrunner Food Bank – Albuquerque, NM

The Storehouse New Mexico – Albuquerque, NM

At The United Family, giving back is part of who we are. It’s baked into our culture, and it fuels everything we do in the 54 communities we serve across Texas and New Mexico. We appreciate our partners, our team members, and guests who continue to help us take a bite out of hunger, one apple at a time.
